Managerial Office Design Trends 2020
Living in a highly connected digital world, while feeling more disconnected than ever, it is unsurprising that humans are craving a sense of nature, nurture and authenticity.
Our social lives are spent on Social Media that bombards us with the “over-the-top” lives of our peers, and corporate environments are transforming into highly digital spaces with limited time and effort for human interaction. This is leading to a big disconnect in our personal as well as corporate lives, with an increased need for truth, character, digital disconnect and human connection.
By drawing inspiration from this modern need, designers acquired a transformed vision of what Office Spaces should embody in 2020. This vision takes us back to the past, enabling us to identify and collect the good that we have lost, and bring it back to the future.
Biophilic Design
Biophilic design focuses on connecting an occupant with nature by incorporating elements of nature and/or elements inspired by nature to an area.
Elements of nature
Elements of nature can be incorporated to Managerial offices through the use of indoor plants, wooden furniture and décor, raw bricks, wooden floors and natural lighting. As these design elements are focused on raw nature, they go best with an environment that is toned down with soft and natural colour palettes such as hues of creams, light and medium browns, clays and white.
Elements inspired by nature
Due to the architecture of the majority of established offices, elements inspired by nature are a popular choice for biophilic design. The possibilities are endless, with managerial offices being transformed into “natural hubs” with the use of natural colours, synthetic plants, laminated floors and nature inspired wallpapers and textures. With the goal of breathing new life and energy into a room, natural colours, such as green and blue, are used in a rich or brightened hue. Another popular method is creating synthetic plant and leaf walls, or adding wallpaper with forest inspired designs on them.
A notable positive of this trend is that incorporating Biophilic design to your Managerial Office not only looks good, but also adds a lot of health benefits. This design trend is known to promote creativity, reduce stress and enhance your overall well-being.
Make it Personal
We are entering an era of individualization and personalization, and as this Macro trend is taking the product and service industry by storm, corporate environments will soon follow suit. One of the largest employee hurdles is the feeling of being “just a number” in the corporate world. This idea is felt from junior- to management staff, with generic offices, decor and impersonal relationships across the board.
With a new generation entering and taking over the corporate world, offices will have to start catering to the personalized needs of this new type of Management staff. There’s never been a bigger opportunity to make staff feel important, needed, and that they have a voice that matters. A visualization of this ideal and shift in organization culture is allowing personalized offices. This will allow a Manager (or other staff) to express their own identity, corporate ideals and also give them a sense of belonging.
A company can think of creative ways in which to allow personalization for each individual that will suit the corporate culture and office design or space. Some ideas include:
- Allowing a manager to choose a wall paint colour from a colour palette pre-selected by the company.
- Creating a chalk paint wall where a manager is able to write ideas, quotes or just doodle to help alleviate stress.
- Having a cohesive collage photo frame in each managerial office where a manager is motivated to add photos that express and showcase their family and personal lives.
Open door policy
Modern day professionalism is evolving to become more informal, considerate and open and honest. The ideal is to create an environment where management and staff can communicate freely, feel valued and have a voice. The focus is on breaking the barrier between management and employees, allowing them to function as a proper team and enabling them to easily contribute new thoughts and ideas.
In order to break this barrier, managerial offices are designed to include an informal setting where employees and management can meet. The best way to achieve this is adding an area where there is no physical barrier, such as a desk, between the employee and manager. This can be done with a soft seating area that can further be enhanced with a coffee machine to promote informal meetings, employee comfort and confidence, and open and honest conversations.
Retro Renaissance
Retro renaissance is a tribute to history. It creates an established and successful feel by incorporating elements from the past and making a statement in the now. This is done by including bold antique furniture, décor items, oriental rugs, old-fashioned wallpaper and dark colours to your office design. Some designers take this trend even further by adding nostalgic “back-in-the-day” items to offices such as Pinball machines, Pacman and Tetris gaming machines and vinyl players.
In order to use the Retro Renaissance trend to their advantage, companies are putting a strong focus on the sense of establishment it creates by adding their company history and story to the mix. This is done by adding framed history to Managerial offices as décor. Some ideas include the building blueprints, black and white photos of when the company first started and the actual typed out history of the company.
Dark colour décor and painted walls tie this trend together with hues of navy, burgundy, red and green showing their presence. These colours are further complimented with gold and brass accent pieces and décor.
A reliable hue
“We are living in a time that requires trust and faith. It is this kind of consistency and confidence that is expressed by PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue, a solid and dependable blue hue we can always rely on. Imbued with a deep resonance, Classic Blue provides an anchoring foundation. A boundless blue evocative of the vast and infinite sky, Classic Blue encourages us to look beyond the obvious to expand our thinking; challenging us to think more deeply, increase our perspective and open the flow of communication.” – Leatrice Eiseman (Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute)
With organizational culture moving back to “human touch” and traditional communication, the Pantone colour of the year becomes a symbolic colour used in 2020 Managerial offices. The colour
embodies honesty, flow and protection and creates a sense of peace to the human spirit. It is timeless, simplistic, and will positively transform Managerial offices in 2020.
